AI VISIBILITY METHODOLOGY

How Rankvia measures AI visibility

Rankvia measures how your brand appears across a defined set of buyer questions relevant to your business. It checks those questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI, records observed brand and competitor appearances and the sources visible around each answer, and keeps the question-level evidence behind the results.

The goal is not to pretend that AI search has a fixed ranking. It is to create a repeatable view of where your brand appears, where competitors appear instead, and which gaps may be worth acting on.

DEFINITION

What Rankvia means by AI visibility

AI Visibility is an observed measurement over Rankvia's defined buyer-question set. It is not a measurement of every private conversation in an AI product, an estimate of total AI impressions, a permanent ranking, or proof that every user receives the same answer.

AI visibility is evidence, not an impression count.

For example, a 40% result means Rankvia observed the brand for 40% of the eligible buyer questions it measured under this methodology. It does not mean that 40% of AI users saw the brand.

1. BUSINESS UNDERSTANDING

Rankvia starts with the business - not an arbitrary prompt list

Rankvia uses the website and Business Profile to establish the product or service, offers, target customer, market, positioning, competitors and relevant existing content. A visibility metric is useful only when the questions reflect what the business genuinely sells and who it serves.

2. Rankvia tracks buyer questions that matter to the business

Questions are selected to cover meaningful discovery, evaluation and purchase decisions. The tracked set stays stable enough for recurring comparisons to be useful. You can remove questions you do not want to track; removed questions are excluded from future scans.

Business-specific

Questions relate to what the company can legitimately compete for.

Buyer-relevant

Questions represent meaningful customer needs or decisions.

Comparable over time

The selected set supports useful scan-to-scan comparison.

Why more prompts do not automatically mean better measurement

AI search has effectively unlimited possible questions. More questions can increase coverage, but irrelevant questions can dilute the usefulness of a metric. Rankvia prioritizes relevant, actionable evidence over a prompt-volume contest.

3. AI PLATFORMS

Rankvia checks the questions across supported AI search experiences

Rankvia currently checks ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI. Each platform response is recorded as its own observation so you can inspect where brand, competitor and source evidence differs. Platform visibility is reported separately; it answers how often a brand appeared for the eligible questions checked on that platform.

ChatGPT

Observed answer, brand and competitor presence, and visible source evidence.

Gemini

Observed answer, brand and competitor presence, and visible source evidence.

Google AI

Observed answer, brand and competitor presence, and visible source evidence.

4. EVIDENCE

Rankvia keeps the evidence behind the score

Aggregated metrics should be traceable back to the observations that produced them.

Brand presence

Whether the tracked brand appeared in the observed AI answer for a buyer question.

Competitor presence

Brands observed in the answer are kept separately from sources.

Platform

The AI experience that produced the observation.

Sources

Observable domains or pages surfaced around the AI answer as supporting evidence.

MEASUREMENT

How Rankvia calculates AI Visibility

Overall AI Visibility is question-level coverage. A question is visible overall when the brand appears in at least one eligible observed response from the supported platforms checked for that question.

AI Visibility

Eligible tracked buyer questions where the brand appeared in at least one supported-platform responseEligible tracked buyer questions checked

× 100

Example

If 25 eligible buyer questions were checked and the brand appeared for 8 of them, AI Visibility is 8 ÷ 25 × 100 = 32%.

A question enters the denominator only when Rankvia has an eligible observation for it. A failed or missing platform response does not create a negative brand result by itself. Platform visibility uses that platform's eligible questions as its denominator. Removed questions are not included in future scans.

INTERPRETATION

Overall visibility and platform visibility answer different questions

Overall AI Visibility

Whether the brand appeared for an eligible buyer question on at least one supported platform Rankvia checked.

Platform visibility

Whether the brand appeared for eligible buyer questions on a particular platform, such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI.

COMPETITIVE MEASUREMENT

How Rankvia calculates AI Share of Voice

AI Share of Voice compares relative observed competitive presence within Rankvia's measured set. It is not market share, traffic share or revenue share.

AI Share of Voice

Observed eligible answers where the brand appearedAll observed brand appearances for the tracked brand and competitors

× 100

Each brand counts once per eligible answer observation, even if its name appears more than once in the same answer. The denominator includes the tracked brand and competitors observed in the measured answers. Share of Voice can be reviewed overall or for an individual platform.

COMPETITORS & SOURCES

How Rankvia identifies competitor visibility

Rankvia distinguishes known competitors in the Business Profile from observed competitors - brands that actually appear in measured AI responses. Those groups can differ. A third-party source is not automatically a competitor.

What Source Intelligence means

A source is not automatically a competitor, a recommendation or a page the customer controls. Rankvia distinguishes the customer's website, competitor websites and third-party sources. A third-party source may support an AI response, but Rankvia cannot modify it.

Rankvia separates actions on your own website from third-party visibility opportunities.

A brand appearance and a source appearance are not the same thing

Brand appearanceSource appearance
Brand is surfaced in the observed answer.Domain or page is surfaced as observable supporting evidence.
Measures user-facing brand visibility.Measures source visibility.
May occur without an own-domain source.May occur without an explicit brand recommendation.
Used for brand and competitive interpretation.Used for Source Intelligence.

CHANGE OVER TIME

AI answers are variable - Rankvia does not treat them like fixed rankings

AI responses can change across time, platforms and repeated runs. An individual observation is not a permanent ranking.

Rankvia treats each scan as observed evidence at a point in time - not proof of a permanent AI ranking.

How to interpret changes between scans

Scan 1

Fresh question-level evidence

Scan 2

Fresh question-level evidence

Scan 3

Fresh question-level evidence

Recurring scans recheck brand visibility, competitors, Share of Voice and question-level results. Changes after publishing or improving a page are useful context, not proof that the page caused the change.

FROM EVIDENCE TO ACTION

A visibility gap does not automatically mean "create a page"

AI Visibility is one signal inside Rankvia's search-growth system. Rankvia evaluates it with business relevance, existing content, available search evidence, and competitor and source context before recommending an action.

Create

A meaningful buyer need lacks an appropriate owned page and evidence supports creating one.

Improve

An existing page owns the need but may be worth strengthening.

Monitor

The signal is useful to track but does not justify a website change yet.

Third-party visibility

The opportunity mainly concerns sources or surfaces outside the customer website.

Skip

The available evidence does not justify action relative to stronger opportunities.

AI Visibility is a signal inside Rankvia's search-growth system - not an instruction to create more content.

Where available, Search Console and other first-party search evidence can add context. Not every input is present in every decision. The strongest justified opportunities can feed the Content Calendar.

LIMITATIONS

What AI Visibility can - and cannot - tell you

  • Rankvia cannot observe every private conversation users have with AI products.
  • The buyer-question set is a relevant sample, not every possible query.
  • AI-generated responses and provider behavior can change.
  • Brand appearance does not equal a click, lead or sale.
  • Source appearance does not automatically mean a recommendation.
  • Missing observed visibility does not prove a brand never appears for any AI user.
  • Rankvia cannot guarantee that creating or improving a page will cause an AI system to mention or cite a brand.
  • Metrics from different vendors cannot safely be compared without understanding their methodology.

AI visibility is a leading signal - business outcomes are the goal

AI visibility
Brand discovery / consideration
Website visit / branded search
Trial / lead / purchase
Revenue

Mentions, source appearances and Share of Voice are visibility signals, not revenue metrics. Where measurable, consider them alongside referral traffic, Search Console performance, conversions, leads and purchases. For broader guidance, read AI search optimization.
