How to Improve AI Visibility: A Practical Action Framework

Learn how to improve AI visibility by diagnosing access, page ownership, weak content, competitors and third-party sources - then choose the right action.

By Rankvia ·

Illustration of AI visibility evidence being diagnosed and routed to the right improvement action.

Improve AI visibility by starting with buyer questions where your brand is repeatedly weak or absent, then diagnosing the cause before changing anything. Fix access problems when access is the issue. Improve the page that already owns the need when one exists. Create a new page only when a distinct buyer need genuinely lacks an owner. If third-party sources shape the answer, treat that as a distribution problem. When the evidence is weak or the opportunity is not commercially important, monitor or skip it.

The useful sequence is: Measure → Diagnose → Choose a response → Execute → Remeasure. If you need the broader concept, read AI Search Visibility. If you have not built a stable baseline, read How to Track AI Visibility.

How to improve AI visibility

Start with a gap worth fixing. A single missing appearance is weak evidence: answers can vary between platforms and over time, while providers can change retrieval and source selection independently of your website. If the problem is specifically ChatGPT visibility, diagnose the missing signal first.

A stronger case for action has a commercially relevant buyer question, repeated weak or absent brand presence, recurring competitor or source patterns, and enough persistence to justify effort. Do not optimize first and investigate later. If the evidence is unstable, Monitor may be the right response.

Diagnose the gap before choosing a tactic

Most useful interventions fit a small set of diagnoses.

Check access and eligibility first

Before rewriting content, verify that the intended page can actually be accessed or considered by the relevant platform.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google says its generative Search experiences continue to use its core Search ranking and quality systems. A page needs normal Google Search eligibility, including being indexable and eligible to appear with a snippet, before it can be considered as a supporting link. That does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or inclusion in a generated answer.

Eligibility answers can this page participate? It does not answer will Google choose it for this buyer question? Check accidental noindex, blocked crawling, broken canonicalization, authenticated content, CDN restrictions, and pages that are not reachable through normal site navigation. For Google-specific detail, see Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.

OpenAI says public websites can potentially appear in ChatGPT Search. Publishers that want page content available for Search summaries, snippets, citations, and links should not block OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI distinguishes it from GPTBot, which concerns potential model training.

Access does not equal placement. Allowing a crawler does not guarantee a citation, recommendation, mention, or a particular answer. OpenAI does not publish a universal ranking-factor checklist. For platform-specific context, read How to Get Cited by ChatGPT.

Decide whether to Create or Improve

Ask one question once access is not the obvious issue: does the website already have the right page for this buyer need?

Create when a distinct buyer need lacks an owner

A new page is justified when the user task is distinct, meaningful to the business, unserved by an existing page, useful to a visitor, and has a clear place in the site. A missing use-case page, integration page, meaningful comparison, buying guide, or implementation document can qualify.

Prompt variations do not automatically deserve separate URLs. “Payroll software for Spanish startups” and “best startup payroll software in Spain” may describe the same underlying need. Think in terms of intent ownership, not prompt ownership. AI Search Content Strategy covers that decision in more depth.

Improve when the correct owner already exists

On established sites, this is often the better response. A feature, product, collection, comparison, integration, or guide may own the need but under-serve it because the answer is unclear, facts are old, product details are missing, audience fit is vague, or useful evidence is absent.

Creating a second page can split the topic rather than strengthen it. Rankvia's Content Refresh workflow follows this ownership principle: improve the existing owner when it is already the natural answer.

Make the business easier to understand accurately

Some gaps are wider than one page. A public website may use inconsistent category descriptions, retain old product names, describe different audiences on different pages, omit important capabilities, or leave stale integration and pricing information live.

Make it easy for a buyer to identify what the product is, what it does, who it is for, its important use cases, meaningful capabilities, and relevant limitations. The goal is not an imaginary entity score. It is accurate understanding. Structured data can support established Search uses where appropriate, but Google says no special Schema.org markup is required for its generative Search features.

Strengthen the evidence on the existing page

Weak content does not become strong because it is longer. A page becomes more useful when it is more specific, accurate, current, and supportable.

Useful improvements include:

  • first-hand expertise from building, using, testing, or delivering the product;
  • concrete product facts, workflows, integrations, requirements, markets, and limitations;
  • original research, anonymized usage evidence, experiments, customer evidence, or original comparisons where available;
  • primary sources for factual claims about APIs, regulations, platforms, or requirements;
  • examples and decision criteria that help a buyer choose; and
  • honest trade-offs and poor-fit cases.

Original evidence gives a publisher something distinctive to reference. It does not guarantee a citation. A shorter page with clear product evidence can be stronger than a generic 4,000-word article.

Fix weak internal discovery

Important pages should not be isolated islands. Google explains that links help it discover pages and understand their relevance. Connect supporting guides to the page they support, comparisons to relevant products, product pages to useful education, and pillar pages to meaningful supporting pages. Fix orphan pages and use descriptive anchors that help readers predict what comes next.

Do not turn this into “internal linking makes ChatGPT cite you.” There is no documented universal rule for that. Internal linking is a strong website and Google Search practice; how other AI providers interpret those relationships is provider-specific. For the practical workflow, see Internal Linking for SEO and AI Search.

Understand competitor and third-party evidence

If a competitor repeatedly appears, do not copy its headings. Inspect which page is surfaced, whether it answers the buyer need more directly, whether its positioning is clearer, and what proof, documentation, comparison criteria, or third-party coverage makes it useful.

A competitor competes for the buyer's decision. A source is a page or domain surfaced as supporting evidence. A source might be your own site, a competitor site, an industry publication, directory, marketplace, review platform, forum, or community. These are different events and can require different responses.

When recurring third-party sources influence important questions, legitimate actions can include accurate listings, genuine reviews, PR, partnerships, expert contributions, original research, marketplace participation, and useful community participation. Do not manufacture evidence with fake reviews, fake forum activity, disguised recommendations, or spammy directories.

Observational studies can reveal correlations between wider public brand presence and AI visibility, but correlation is not a universal causal model or ranking factor. Earn independent evidence because it helps buyers and strengthens the information environment around the business, not because it promises a placement.

Know when to Monitor or Skip

Monitor when the brand disappeared once, only one platform shows the issue, answers change materially between scans, the question has limited commercial importance, or source patterns are inconsistent. Reacting to every fluctuation creates duplicate pages, unnecessary rewrites, unstable positioning, and prompt-chasing content.

Skip is also a legitimate strategy. Skip when the question poorly fits the product, targets the wrong buyer, has negligible commercial value, misrepresents the offer, already has an adequate owner, or would duplicate a better opportunity.

Turn visibility gaps into the right next action

Rankvia combines AI Visibility with business context, existing pages, search demand, competitors, and sources before recommending Create, Improve, Monitor, Third-party visibility, or Skip.

Prioritize gaps by business value, not percentage

A 0% visibility gap can look urgent without being important. Consider business relevance, buyer intent, commercial significance, persistence, platform breadth, page ownership, relevant search or first-party evidence, confidence in the diagnosis, and effort relative to better opportunities.

The visibility percentage is an input, not a prioritization strategy. A partially visible direct-recommendation question with recurring competitors and a clearly weak existing page can deserve more attention than a broad, poor-fit informational query with no observed visibility.

AI visibility tactics to be skeptical of

  • llms.txt as a universal lever: Google says it ignores llms.txt for Google Search. That does not establish a rule for every provider.
  • Special AI schema: Google says no special Schema.org markup is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use ordinary structured data only when it accurately represents visible content.
  • Tiny AI-friendly content chunks: clear structure helps readers, but Google says no special content chunking is necessary for its generative experiences.
  • A page for every prompt: many prompts describe the same intent. Avoid scaled query-variation pages built to manipulate results.
  • More AI-generated pages: volume without distinct value is not a visibility strategy.
  • Crawler access as a guarantee: it removes an access barrier; it does not create a recommendation guarantee.
  • One successful recheck as causation: a change in an answer is useful evidence, not proof that one intervention caused it.

Remeasure without claiming causality

There is no universal propagation window. Publish the change, confirm that it is live and accessible, allow normal discovery or recrawl where relevant, then recheck on your established cadence with the same core buyer questions. Do not change the measurement at the same time you change the page.

Measure three different outcomes:

  1. Visibility: did relevant brand, recommendation, competitor, or source evidence change repeatedly?
  2. Search and traffic: where available, review Search impressions, generative Search reporting, ChatGPT referrals, relevant landing-page traffic, branded search, and qualified visits.
  3. Business: eventually assess leads, signups, trials, purchases, subscriptions, or revenue.

OpenAI documents utm_source=chatgpt.com in ChatGPT Search referral URLs, which makes identifiable referral visits measurable in analytics. Visibility is not revenue, and improvement is not proof of causation. For the full comparability framework, see How to Track AI Visibility.

    Frequently asked questions

How do you improve AI visibility?

Start with buyer questions where your brand is repeatedly weak or absent, diagnose the likely cause, then use the smallest justified intervention: Fix, Create, Improve, Third-party visibility, Monitor, or Skip.

Why does my brand not appear in ChatGPT?

There is no single cause. Access, weak owned content, unclear positioning, stronger competitor evidence, influential third-party sources, poor question fit, and answer variability can all contribute. OpenAI does not publish a universal checklist that guarantees a recommendation.

Should I create new content to improve AI visibility?

Only when a distinct, valuable buyer need lacks an appropriate page. If the right page already exists, improve that page instead of creating an overlapping URL.

Do backlinks, reviews, or mentions improve AI visibility?

They can improve discovery, public evidence, and buyer confidence, but there is no universal cross-platform causal rule. Treat observational relationships as correlations, not guaranteed AI ranking factors.

How long should I wait before rechecking?

There is no universal timeframe. Confirm the change is live and accessible, then remeasure on your normal tracking cadence using the same core questions and look for repeated movement.
